Reading the code
The first digit describes protection against solid objects and dust. The second digit describes protection against water. In both IP65 and IP67, the 6 indicates dust-tight protection under the applicable test. The difference is the water test represented by the second digit.
IP65 in project terms
IP65 indicates protection against water jets under the test conditions. It may be appropriate for many exposed installations when the enclosure, cable entries and mounting are implemented as tested.
IP67 in project terms
IP67 adds temporary immersion protection under the applicable test conditions. That does not automatically mean the installed display can operate underwater or ignore drainage, cable sealing, temperature and service procedures.
What buyers should verify
- Which complete model and enclosure configuration was tested
- Whether doors, vents, connectors and cable glands match the test sample
- Installation orientation, foundation, drainage and sheltered or exposed use
- How heat is removed without compromising seals
- What happens after the service door has been opened in the field
- Current report, issuing body, standard version and certificate validity
Do not let the IP number hide thermal risk
A tightly sealed cabinet still has to move heat away from the panel, player and power electronics. Compare passive aluminum heat dissipation, active fans and climate-control methods for the actual ambient temperature and solar load.
